In January 2002, Cat Tesla’s husband Simo was diagnosed with colorectal cancer at the age of 41. Although detected at an early stage, after surgery, he had to undergo chemotherapy and radiation treatments every day for 6 weeks. During that difficult time he was unable to work, but had a couple hours each day that he wasn’t sick from the treatment. Simo enjoys working with wood and informed Cat one day that he had made some boxes for her to paint on instead of the usual canvas. (Oh great, she thought! The last thing I want as an artist is for someone to tell me what to do!) Simo replied: “Think outside of the box. Paint outside of the box!” He put the boxes in the garage and encouraged me to paint them.

So I did.

Over time Simo’s health has returned to normal and he feels great! Meanwhile, he has made, and I have painted, more than two thousand of the “Outside of the Box Art®” paintings. They are collected by people around the world.

OTBs make a small wall space look big, and turn a large wall space into a statement. Art-filled shelves are never more swanky than with OTBs lounging on them. Powder room walls with a couple of OTBs cause people to linger. Large grids of OTBs may cause mouths to drop wide-open. Gasping can occur. Some collectors blame their obsession on OTBs to their unique designs. But the real addiction is the ability to design your own wall, then rearrange it whenever you want, becoming a brand new work of art all over again.
